Research conducted by Women for Election Australia reveals that people surveyed do not believe that the political representation is diverse enough and demand for greater women representation.

Women for Election, an organisation which provides support and training to women keen on entering politics, conducted a research which revealed that 69% of people surveyed agreed that greater diversity in politics would create overall better outcomes for the country. A report by the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership supports these results because they too stated that when women have political leadership, there are gains not just for women and girls but for the whole of society.

This comes in light of how women continue to be underrepresented at all levels of the Australian government. Women make up just over one third of federal, state and local members of parliament, assemblies and councils.

"(Women) are out in the community every day, working out what can be improved and fixing it; for the betterment of their community. It's a power that's always been there, humming away in the background, and that dedication to community is what we want from our political representatives," emphasises Licia Heath, CEO, Women for Election Australia.

As part of this research, with 67% of people surveyed believing that current politicians do not accurately represent the nation's diversity, it remains to be seen whether there will indeed be an unshering of a new, diverse era of leadership in the coming year.
