A new survey has found that two in three employees in Australia feel they have to hide part of their identity at work, including their age, religion, culture, sexual orientation or disability, out of fear of discrimination.

According to the YouGov survey of more than 2000 Australians, there were 65% of people felt they needed to hide a part of themselves at work – which had jumped from 47% in 2019. The pandemic has also worsened the situation, with fewer professionals feeling they can express their true selves at work compared to two years ago.

Two in three LGBTQI+ workers did not feel comfortable revealing their sexuality at work, while three in four people with a physical or mental disability were likely to hide that fact. Experts have warned that the big mistake employers make is just focusing on a good office, salary and benefits to keep staff happy.

“The pandemic has seen diversity and inclusion efforts going backwards. For many organisations and their staff, the last couple of years has been about survival and keeping your job,” said Cathy Ngo, D&I Expert. She said this meant people were fearful to reveal something about them, while workplace programs also took a “back seat” to encourage these conversations.
